How to spot a trustworthy peptide supplier
There is no website-level signal that reliably distinguishes a credible peptide supplier from a confident-looking one. The signals that matter are documentary: batch-level COAs, independent issuance, and traceability that an outsider can verify. This is the short list.

The wrong signals (and why they feel persuasive)
The signals most often used to evaluate peptide suppliers — website design, customer reviews, lab-coat photography, claims of “pharmaceutical grade” or “99% pure”, and the presence of a Certificate of Analysis — are weak proxies for what actually matters.
Website design is downstream of marketing budget. Reviews capture shipping speed and customer service, neither of which is correlated with analytical purity. “Pharmaceutical grade” is not a regulated term in the research peptide market. A generic COA on a website, with no batch number, is a specification sheet — not evidence about the vial you would receive.
None of these are bad to have. They are just not the things that separate a credible supplier from a confident-looking one.
Signal 1: a batch-specific COA, not a generic one
The single most important documentary signal is that the supplier issues a unique Certificate of Analysis for every batch, identified by a batch / lot number that appears on the vial label. A generic COA — one document linked from the product page that applies to “all batches” — is a specification, not a result.
A real batch COA names the batch, the manufacture date, the expiry, the analyst, and the issuing lab. Two vials from two different runs of the same peptide should have two different batch numbers and two different COAs — or, if the same batch, the same batch number on both vials and the same COA. Reuse of one batch number across visibly different production runs is a serious flag.
Signal 2: the COA is issued by someone other than the seller
Once a batch-specific COA is in hand, the next question is who issued it. A COA issued by the supplier's own internal lab is better than no COA, but it is structurally weaker than one issued by an independent third-party laboratory. Practically, this means the “issuing laboratory” line on the COA should be a different legal entity from the supplier — with its own name, address, and analyst signature. If the COA is signed by “Quality Control, [supplier name]”, it is an in-house document.
Signal 3: methods are reported in full
A purity number is meaningless without the method that produced it. A trustworthy COA reports, at minimum:
- For HPLC purity: column dimensions and chemistry, mobile phase composition, gradient, flow rate, detection wavelength, and the main-peak percentage with the size of the largest impurity.
- For LC-MS identity: instrument type, ionization mode, observed mass, theoretical mass, and the deviation in daltons and ppm.
- For content / assay: the method (AAA, quantitative HPLC vs. reference standard, or UV at 280 nm) and the numeric result.
- For supporting tests: counter-ion identity and percent, water content by Karl Fischer, residual solvents against USP <467> where applicable.
“Purity: 99%” with no method is uninformative. Two labs running two methods will produce two different numbers on the same vial — that is normal. What matters is that the method is disclosed.
Signal 4: the COA is verifiable after issuance
A PDF, even a signed one, can be altered after the fact — numbers swapped, batch IDs changed, chromatogram images resized — and the alteration is invisible to the buyer. A trustworthy COA is verifiable after issuance, ideally in a way that does not require trusting the issuing lab.
Two patterns are credible. The first is a public verification URL hosted by the issuing lab where the COA can be re-fetched and compared. The second, stronger, pattern is a tamper-evident anchor: the COA is content-hashed (SHA-256) and the hash is recorded on a public blockchain at issuance. Signal 5: the vial in your hand traces back to the COA
Even a perfect COA is worth nothing if it cannot be tied to the specific vial that arrived. Three small things make this work in practice:
- The batch / lot number on the vial label is the same one that appears on the COA.
- The manufacture and expiry dates on the vial match those on the COA.
- The peptide name and dry mass on the vial match the declared identity and content on the COA.

A first-order checklist
Before placing a first order with a new supplier, three concrete steps separate the careful buyer from the optimistic one:
- Ask for an actual, recent, batch-specific COA — not a generic spec sheet, not a sample from two years ago. A supplier that cannot produce one for a current batch within a day has answered the question.
- Read the “issuing laboratory” line. If it is the supplier itself, the COA is in-house. If it is an independent lab, note the name and check that the lab exists, has a real address, and is reachable.
- Confirm the COA is tied to a real batch you would receive: ask which batch is currently shipping, and check that the corresponding COA names that batch.

What is the single most important signal that a peptide supplier is trustworthy?
Batch-level traceability backed by independent verification. Are customer reviews a useful signal for peptide quality?
Reviews are useful for shipping, customer service, and reconstitution experience. They are not useful for analytical quality. A buyer cannot detect a few percent purity difference, the wrong counter-ion, or low active content by handling a vial — only a lab can. Trust the lab data, not the reviews.
Is a low price a red flag for peptide quality?
Not on its own. Manufacturing scale, location, and overhead vary enormously between suppliers, so the same peptide can be legitimately priced quite differently. What matters is whether the price comes with a real, batch-specific, independently issued COA. Cheap with no COA is a red flag. Cheap with a verifiable independent COA is not.
What should a buyer do before placing a first order with a new supplier?
Three things, in order. First, ask for a sample COA for any recent batch — not a generic specification sheet, an actual batch report. Second, check whether the issuing laboratory is the supplier itself or an independent lab. Third, confirm that the COA matches the batch the buyer would receive (batch number, date, signed). If a supplier cannot or will not provide this, that is the answer.
